Understanding the Landscape
Tuolumne County is known for its breathtaking landscapes, including Yosemite National Park and the Stanislaus National Forest. This natural beauty attracts tourists and outdoor enthusiasts, contributing significantly to the local economy. However, the county's reliance on tourism also exposes it to seasonal fluctuations and economic vulnerabilities.
At the same time, residents are facing real challenges. Many jobs tied to tourism are seasonal, there are limited industries providing stable employment, and the rising cost of housing and basic necessities is putting pressure on local families.
Protecting our environment while supporting our community is also essential. Wildfire risk remains a constant concern, and proactive forest management and collaboration with fire services are critical to keeping our communities safe. Water is one of our most valuable resources, and responsible water management will be key to ensuring reliable access for future generations.
We are also seeing broader social challenges. Businesses have closed, reducing jobs and local gathering places. Our population is aging, placing greater demand on services and transportation. Homelessness is growing and requires practical, compassionate solutions. Expanding mental health services and supporting vulnerable residents are critical pieces of improving overall community well-being.
I believe solutions start with strong community involvement. By working together—residents, local organizations, businesses, and government—we can develop practical solutions that reflect the needs of our county.
That includes supporting local businesses, protecting property rights, strengthening agriculture and ranching, managing tourism responsibly, and protecting the forests, water, and landscapes that make Tuolumne County home.
Together, we can build a county that grows responsibly, protects its natural resources, and creates opportunities for the next generation while preserving the character and independence that make this community so special.
